About Us

Ursan Meadery

Ursan Meadery was started in 2017 by two brothers, Jack and Nathaniel Jarvis. It is located on the family farm between Kentville and New Ross in Nova Scotia.

Jack is the mead maker, he graduated from Acadia University in 2016 with a degree in Chemistry and has put it to good use since creating many batches of 'experimental' meads before settling on the delightful mead recipes that he uses today.

Nathaniel with his passion for history and sales in equal measure is the sales half of the partnership.

Their desire is to create meads that use traditional methods and recipes and locally sourced ingredients where they can. They allow only good quality ingredients in their carefully crafted meads and the results show. They won two silver medals and a bronze medal in last years Beyond the Grape international competition in Virginia, their first ever competition!

Mead is very deserving of its revival and it is exciting to be a part of its return to popularity. Nathaniel and Jack have been enjoying the reactions of the public as they sample their meads and in a few short months Ursan Meadery's meads already have quite a following.

Mead

Mead is fermented honey and is thought to be one of the world's oldest fermented drinks. Enjoyed throughout the ages, myths and legends tell us it is the drink of choice of gods, kings and heroes alike. We love it and we think you will too.

Our Meads

We have two different styles of mead:

The first is made in the style of a wine, it is 10% alc/vol, on the sweet end of table wine into dessert wine level of sweetness and comes in three different flavours.

Sweet Mead 750ml

Blueberry Mead 750ml

Baklava Mead 750 ml

The second kind are the Short Meads. Short meads are lower in alcohol at 6% and these have been made in the style of a cider or a light beer. They come in two kinds, the classic Short Mead and Blueberry Short Mead. They are medium dry.

There are plans for seasonal / small batch meads too :

Blueberry Maple made from local maple syrup and blueberries, you can't get much more 'East Coast' than that! Sure to be a hit with locals and tourists alike. It was the most popular in our taste trials!

Cyser (apple mead)

Peach Melba Mead using local peaches and raspberries,

Blackcurrant Mead using blackcurrants from our farm,

Strawberry Mead using locally sourced strawberries.
